Naples/Marco Island

Whether you are a golfer, an angler, a sheller, a shopper, a bird watcher, a boater, or you enjoy the arts, history, or relaxing on the beach, you’ll find it in the Naples/Marco Island area.

Naples typically ranks either first or second in national golf holes per capita surveys. With close to 90 golf courses in Collier County, there are plenty of choices.

The area is also an angler’s paradise, with 37 miles of barrier island coastline extending from Naples south to Marco Island and then deep into the mangrove forests of the Ten Thousand Islands and the Everglades. Whether you are dedicated to tarpon, snook and redfish in the backcountry or grouper, snapper, or king mackerel in the Gulf, you’ll find exciting saltwater fishing action year-round. Everglades National Park and Big Cypress National Preserve are two of the most famous parks in the area, but there are many other parks and preserves for bird watching and wildlife watching, as well as enjoying outdoor recreation such as canoeing, kayaking, and hiking. The Naples Zoo offers live lions and tigers, while the Naples Botanical Gardens features lorikeets and butterflies.

Fifth Avenue South -- with boutiques and art galleries -- and Third Street South – home to Gallery Row, fashion boutiques and interior design stores -- make Naples a favorite for both casual and power shoppers. The Greater Naples area offers over 130 galleries, and many artists are in residence at studio galleries. There are also hundreds of art and cultural events happening in the area every month.

Of course, the Naples and Marco Island area -- dubbed the “Paradise Coast” -- is famous for sugar white sand beaches. Beach parks are numerous, some with full facilities, and others with deserted sand beaches. Beachfront resorts in Naples provide direct access to the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. Spectacular sunsets across the Gulf are just one of the scenic attractions.

St. Petersburg/Tampa/Clearwater Area

The area that includes Tampa, Clearwater, and St. Petersburg is often called “Florida’s Suncoast.” With beautiful Gulf of Mexico sunsets and beaches, arts and culture, sports and recreation, and great shopping and dining, Florida’s Suncoast has something for everyone. Located on a peninsula on Florida’s west coast, the region is bordered by the Tampa Bay to the east and the Gulf of Mexico to the west.

Some of the most beautiful beaches in Florida can be found along Florida’s Suncoast. Towns like St. Pete Beach, Belleair, Clearwater, Treasure Island, Safety Harbor, Brandon, Dunedin, and Tarpon Springs are known for amazing white sand beaches that seem to glow in the sunshine. In fact, two of the area beaches have won the coveted “America’s Beach Beaches” award from Dr. Beach, who releases an annual list of best beaches based on 50 criteria. Caladesi Island State Park, a 2007 America’s Best Beaches winner (near Dunedin/Clearwater, FL), is one of the few completely natural islands along Florida's Gulf Coast. With sparkling white sand shores, the Caladesi Island State Park is accessible only by private boat or by ferry from Honeymoon Island State Park. Fort DeSoto Park, a 2005 America’s Best Beaches winner (near North Beach, St Petersburg), is the largest park in the area with over seven miles of beaches and five interconnected islands.

Other beautiful beaches in the area include the tropical Belleair Beach, with a tranquil shoreline, less congested than nearby beaches. Clearwater, and the barrier island of St. Pete Beach offer an array of outdoor activities, such as fishing, boating, snorkeling or shelling, or just relaxing in the surf or sand. Sand Key Park, located on Sand Key, a barrier island between the Gulf of Mexico and the Florida mainland, has a large beach that is popular with families. Indian Rocks Beach is located on a barrier island and offers a chance to surf on the gentle Gulf waves. Madeira Beach, located halfway between Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach is quieter, making it an ideal vacation spot for the entire family. You can enjoy the sight of fishing boats unloading their catches at nearby Johns Pass. Pass-a-Grille Beach offer visitors a taste of “Old Florida” and great views of sunsets and dolphins.

In addition to the beaches, fishing is popular with visitors along the Suncoast, since the Gulf is home to more than 300 varieties of fish, such as snapper, king-fish, mackerel, tarpon, red fish, and sailfish. The historic and picturesque Tarpon Springs area offers deep sea fishing and live sponge diving exhibitions. The community is enriched by the Mediterranean heritage brought at the turn of the century by Greek sponge divers and their families. Charters are abundant along the Florida Suncoast; the Clearwater Marina is home to the largest fishing fleet on the Gulf Coast. You can also take in a Major League baseball game: the Tampa Bay Devil Rays play at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. Some of the most beautiful links in Florida can be found in the area, as well. The challenging Mangrove Bay Golf Course is ranked as one of the nation’s top 50 municipal golf courses, and there are plenty of other fine golf courses to choose from in the area.

The Tampa/St. Petersburg area has many excellent restaurants and unique shopping areas. Most are in the downtown and waterfront districts. In the St. Pete area, make your way to the specialty boutiques along the 8th Avenue business district in Pass-A-Grille and browse items such as original hammered jewelry. For a relaxing day popping in and out of stores, stroll the Historic Corey Avenue Shopping District or any of the stores located along Gulf Boulevard.

Get out of the sun by visiting the many arts, culture, and science venues in the area, such as the Aquarium Tarpon Springs, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Florida Aquarium, Pier Aquarium, Dr. Carter G.
